We needed something that could carry the 200 Mt warhead. It was just too hard having to wait for a Saturn + UFO Tech or a Miniaturization card. To compensate for the insane longevity and effectiveness of a 200 Mt bomber, we put in the chance of crashing. I honestly have no idea why a B52 should be vulnerable to the same interceptors as a B58, except that they are roughly contemporaneous -- and of course it means I didn't have to modify the chart. Real-world B52s have a bunch of cool aspects (rear gunner turret, stand-off cruise missiles, etc.) that I simply could not conceive of working into the game.
