Named of course for Andrei Sakharov, Russian weapons designer-turned-dissident, whose growing unease over the collateral damage from nuclear testing led him to oppose the Soviet Politburo and so earned him a twenty-year exile in Siberia. The in-joke here is that my students receive, as one of their reading assignments, a short biography ("The Metamorphosis of Andrei Sakharov") of the scientitst. -=-BhpG |
