In Norse mythology, the Valkyries ("choosers of the dead") ride over any battle site and carry off the bravest and fiercest warriors, so that Odin can use them during Ragnarok. The icon is a horned helmet and a buckler, staples of long Germanic operas, some of which mention Valkyries. OK, so it's tenuous.
